Update: ECB's Asmussen: Skeptic On Negative ECB Deposit Rates

BERLIN (MNI) - European Central Bank Executive Board member Joerg Asmussen said Monday that he is skeptical of the possibility of the central bank cutting its rate on excess deposits below the current 0% level.
"One should be very cautious regarding the discussion if the ECB could introduce negative deposit rates," Asmussen said in a speech at the Chamber of Industry and Commerce (IHK) here. "This can have advantages, but it can also have disadvantages," he noted
The central bank is conducting an "open discussion" on this matter, Germany's member on the ECB board said. "But certainly some are more open than others and there is surely no doubt that I belong to those which are less open to this," he stressed.
Asmussen also reiterated his warning that too-low interest rates for too long can lead to misallocation of capital in the Eurozone. "For example, people are investing in stocks in search for new profits because they are fleeing from bonds," he explained. "We have to keep an eye on this."
Still, the ECB is currently seeing no inflation pressures in the Eurozone, Asmussen said. However, if the central bank would see "only a hint" of inflation pressure building up it would react, he vowed. Yet, for the moment inflation in the Eurozone "is very low" and inflation expectations "are firmly anchored," he remarked.
Asmussen compared the economic situation in the Eurozone to a weather report, noting that it was "cool, grey and clouded.". However, "there are more and more sunny days," he remarked. Recent industrial production data in the Eurozone was stronger than expected. Germany's Ifo business sentiment index also turned out better than foreseen, he remarked. On the other hand, there are also subdued signals, like the recent DIHK business sentiment index in Germany, he pointed out.
